Jute Burlap

Eurasian Milfoil is a type of milfoil that is not native to North America.  It is problematic because it grows in dense underwater mats that can suffocate native plants.

In 2012, ABV7 began an experimental project in Lake Pémichangan in the Gatineau Valley.  This lake, like many others in our territory, was suffering from the presence of this invasive plant species.  Lake Pémichangan was chosen as the project location because the residence living beside the lake were concerned about the presence of the milfoil and the Lake Association, Friends of Lake Pémichangan, had for many years been demonstrating a lot of interesting in tackling the problem.

The project involved installing jute burlap on the Eurasian Milfoil beds present in the lake.  A previous project had identified aquatic plants present in the lake and assessed their density.  Beds of a reasonable size and a composition approaching 100% milfoil were selected for treatment with the jute burlap.

The project monitored progress at the lake during the summers of 2012, 2013 and 2014, with the goal of evaluating the ability of jute burlap to curtail the growth of the invasive milfoil plants and allow the return of native plants to treated areas.  Very positive results have been realised through the project.  The final report will be ready in the winter of 2015 and following this ABV7 wishes to continue to monitor progress for an additional two years to more fully understand the long term effects of this intervention.

The ABV7 would like to hear from any associations, municipalities or MRCs interested in undertaking a project to control Eurasian Milfoil.  The first stage of the project would be a lake characterisation study to assess the extend of the plant beds.  Please feel free to contact us for more information: email: info@abv7.org or tel: 819 771 5025.

Here are some photos illustrating the results that can be achieved with jute burlap:
